  • Africa Personal Representatives (APRs) Meeting – Roma
    • The Italian G8 Presidency is keeping the spotlight trained very firmly on Africa.  The aim is to pursue in-depth dialogue with the countries on the continent through strengthened cooperation on an equal footing with the pan-African institutions.  In pursuit of this goal, a meeting of G8 member countries' Africa Personal Representatives is due to be held on Tuesday 9 May, ahead of the G8 Summit in L'Aquila in July where they will be meeting with their African counterparts.

  • African Partnership Forum - Roma
    • The African Partnership Forum, a meeting between representatives of the G8 member countries, the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) and the African governments, is due to be held in Rome on 10 June.  The priorities of this APF under Italy's G8 presidency for 2009 include:  mitigating the impact of the financial crisis on Africa's real economies; consolidating peace and security in Africa; the struggle against climate changes, with special attention being paid to the protection of the Congo Basin (the world's second most important green lung after the Amazon Forest); developing administrative systems and political processes (E-Governance); and reforming the AFP itself.

  • Development Ministers' Meeting – Roma (1st day)
    • The G8 Development Ministers' Meeting, entitled “G8 Development Ministers Meeting, Global Governance for Global Solidarity”, is on the slate at the Farnesina for 11 and 12 June.  The meeting's leitmotif is the impact of the economic crisis on developing countries, and it is being held after two previous rendez-vous:  the European Union General Affairs and External Relations Council on Development on 18 and 19 May; and the UN High Level Conference.  One of the issues on the agenda is the adoption of a multisector approach to sustainable development, the aim of which is to maximize synergy and cooperation in such areas of development as education, the environment, health and food safety and security.  Going beyond the traditional Heiligendamm format, which comprises Brasil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa, plus in this instance also Egypt, representatives of the African Union, NEPAD, the United Nations (UNDESA), the OECD, the World Bank, the FAO, the IFAD, the WFP, the WHO and the African Development Bank have also been invited to attend.

  • Development Ministers' Meeting – Roma (2nd day)
    • Work on the second day will begin with an Outreach Session devoted to combating the international financial crisis, and it will continue in the course of the morning with a final G8 session to draft the final declaration.
      The news conference is slated for 12:30.

  • G8 Finance Ministers' Meeting – Lecce (1st day)
    • The Treasury Department is organizing the G8 Finance Ministers' Meeting in Lecce on 12 and 13 June, at the Castle of Emperor Charles V in the city's historical centre.  The event will coincide with the launch of the operational phase of a pilot scheme known as Advanced Market Commitments (AMCs), devoted to a search for a vaccines against the contagious diseases that are among the main causes of infant mortality in developing countries.  The project, funded by Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, Norway and the Gates Foundation, also benefits from the participation of the World Bank, the GAVI, UNICEF and the WHO.

  • G8 Finance Ministers' Meeting – Lecce (2nd day)
    • The G8 Finance Ministers' Meeting is to due to wind up with a news conference organized by the G8 Presidency at the city's Grand Hotel Tiziano at approximately 15:00.

  • IV Summit of Religious Leader on the occasion of G8 - Roma (1stday)
    • The IVth Summit of Religious Leaders on the occasion of the G8 is to be held in Rome on 16 and 17 June 2009.  The consultations among the world's religious leaders, meeting in Rome this year in view of the fact that Italy holds the G8 Presidency, will be focusing as in previous years on the problems besetting today's world.  The leaders will also be taking a look at the issues on the agenda at the G8 Summit in L'Aquila, drafting a joint final declaration for submission to the governments taking part in the G8.
      The religious representatives will be attending a ceremony in L'Aquila's cathedral square at 10:00 to mark their visit to the area struck by the earthquake.
      The religious leaders will be received by President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano at the Quirinale Palace in Rome at 16:00.
      Work is due to begin with a session in the Foreign Ministry's Villa Madama venue at 17:30.  Foreign Minister Franco Frattini and Vincenzo Paglia, who chairs the Italian Bishops' Conference Committe for Ecumenism and Dialogue, will be opening the meeting with an inaugural address.

  • IV Summit of Religious Leader on the occasion of G8 - Roma (2ndday)
    • The working sessions on the second day will be held in the Foreign Ministry's Conference Room at the Farnesina, starting at 9:30.
      The Meeting will wind up at 19:30 with the reading, approval and submission of the final declaration.

  • G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting – Trieste (1st day)
    • The G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting is due to be held in Trieste from 25 to 27 June.  This is to be the last such preparatory meeting at ministerial level before the Summit of L'Aquila in July.  The Foreign Ministers' Meeting will be focusing on regional stabilization and on nuclear non-proliferation.

  • G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting – Trieste (2nd day)
    • Second day of the G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting.  A number of meetings will be devoted to Afghanistan, in connection with its geographical context, with border management and with the struggle against illegal trafficking.

  • G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting – Trieste (3rd day)
    • Saturday 27 June is the third and last day of the G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting.  Three working sessions are planned:  the first on the development of infrastructures in Afghanistan, the second on assistance for refugees and on migration, and the third on farming and food safety and security.
      The final news conference is due to be held at the Palazzo della Regione at 13.00.
