  • G8 Farmers’ Union - Roma
    • The G8 Farmers' Union is the forum for the G8 countries’ major agriculture organisation leaders, who assemble in Rome on 19 March for talks on agriculture, food, the environment and alternative energy sources at times of crisis. The event is being organised by the Coldiretti, Italy’s main nationwide farming organisation, and is to be held at Palazzo Rospigliosi, the organisation’s headquarters. The G8 Farmers' Union will be attended by members of the national, European and international institutions, including representatives from the embassies, the FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Committee of Professional Agricultural Organisations (COPA) and the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA).

  • G8+5 Academies' Meeting - Roma (1st day)
    • International migration flows and the new technologies for generating and storing energy are the issues central to the meeting of the G8 + 5 countries’ science academies, to be held at Rome’s Palazzo Corsini, headquarters of the Accademia dei Lincei, on 26 and 27 March. In addition to the eight major countries, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa and Egypt, the latter in an observer’s capacity, will be attending. The meeting’s conclusions will be forwarded to the heads of state and government in preparation for the G8 Summit in L’Aquila. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini and Heritage Minister Sandro Bondi are to address the meeting, which will also be attended by the President of the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC). 
      The proceedings will get under way on the morning of 26 March with two simultaneous public sessions given over to the new energy technologies and migration.

  • G8+5 Academies' Meeting - Roma (2nd day)
    • Day two of the science academies’ meeting will be given over to a session behind closed doors, for the delegations only. The summit will end with a news conference at 1 pm. The meeting’s conclusions will be forwarded to the heads of state and government in preparation for the G8 Summit in L’Aquila.

  • G8 Labour Ministers' Meeting – Roma (1st day)
    • “People first” is the topic of the G8 Social Forum, the purpose of which is to discuss and examine the measures for addressing unemployment, with particular reference to family income support and support for workers who fall prey to the crisis.
      The meeting, which is to be held in Rome from 29 to 31 March, will be attended by the labour ministers of the world’s 14 chief economies, the heads of the international organisations concerned and the Chinese, Indian, Brazilian, Mexican, South African and Egyptian labour ministers. Numerous international organisations also have an interest: the United Nations, in the form of the International Labour Organisation (IILO) will be present in addition to the European Union, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The proceedings commence on the afternoon of Sunday 29 March with a meeting between the representatives of the two sides of industry (TUAC - Trade Union Advisory Committee and BIAC - Business and Industry Advisory Committee).

  • Labour Ministers’ Meeting – Roma (2nd day)
    • Day two of the labour ministers’ meeting will be divided into two plenary sessions: the first, which will be introduced by a report from OECD Secretary General Anguel Gurrìa, will focus on the more immediate impact of the crisis in the G8 countries. The second, which will be introduced by ILO Director General Juan Somavia, will extend the debate on the more lasting repercussions of the crisis to all 14 countries attending.

  • Labour Ministers’ Meeting – Roma (3rd day)
    • The third plenary session, to be held on the last day of the labour ministers’ meeting, will be opened in the morning by the International Monetary Fund’s first deputy managing director, John Lipsky, and will review the place of welfare policies and the human dimension in the new globalised scenario.
      3 pm: Final press conference.
