Local Redevelopment
As a sign of the determination to impart a fresh boost to areas struck by the earthquake on 6 April, the Italian Cabinet proposed to shift the upcoming G8 Summit from the island of La Maddalena, in Sardinia, to Abruzzo.
In the next few days the website will be gradually updated on the new events.

The Building Site
The heart of the G8, the areas where the Summit's major meetings will be held, is taking shape around the Arsenale marittimo (maritime arsenal), the original structure of which is being restored and turned into a modern, well-equipped conference centre. One of the hotels where the summit's illustrious guests are to stay is close to completion in the same area, overlooking the renovated harbour. The island's military hospital, too, has been converted for use as a hotel. Other buildings are taking shape, in line with a detailed schedule, as working premises for the delegations and as housing for the facilities required for efficient management of the summit's tightly-packed meetings agenda.
Conversion of Premises
Work is likewise under way with a view to salvaging disused premises as venues for exhibitions devoted to the event and other cultural initiatives, taking account of their possible future uses right from the design and outfitting stages.
The day after the end of the G8, La Maddalena will find itself the proud possessor of ultra-modern facilities and amenities. The Heads of State and government's suites will at once be available for routine tourist accommodation use, and the conference amenities will be ready to host further gatherings of every type. The harbour, with its fully renovated quays, moorings and amenities, will be free to turn into an attractive port of call for seafaring, and in particular sailing enthusiasts.
