In the course of the news conference, Guido Bertolaso reviewed the history of the island of La Maddalena, which is particularly well known for its military past. The historical structures in the military Arsenal area are to be restored as part of a particularly significant environmental renovation programme, and they are set to become one of the most attractive parts of the island in the future, too, in terms of tourist hospitality.
Bertolaso explained that the Arsenal area, which belonged to the Italian Navy for about 100 years, was made over to the Sardinia Regional Authority in March 2008. Work on renovating the Arsenal and the land surrounding it began in May, in preparation for the construction of a new marina and new hotels.
