In the course of the news conference for the presentation of the logo, Guido Bertolaso, Commissioner Delegate for the G8, briefed journalists on the work being done on the military Arsenal on the island of La Maddalena, and in particular on the area designated for delegates and for the conference of the heads of state and government leaders. He then used slides to illustrate the other buildings under construction: a hotel inside the Darsena, where some of the delegations will be lodged and, on the righthand side of the Arsenal, the service centre for all the various activities.  Bertolaso stressed that all of this will become a huge base where it will be possible to host conferences and seminars. It will provide berths for over 300 boats of all sizes and it can organise major sporting events connected with the yachting world.
Guido Bertolaso went on to illustrate the functional projects currently under way in the Arsenal area: a major reclamation plan, with a boost to the Maddalena island's purification plant; the restoration of the heritage area linked to Giuseppe Garibaldi; an extension to Olbia airport; the construction of new barracks and police stations; and a plan to build a motorway linking Olbia to Sassari, using funding from the Underused Areas Fund managed by the Sardinia Regional Authority. Bertolaso stressed that all of these projects will be able to kick off just as soon as the Interministerial Economic Planning Committee has met.  The Commissioner Delegate went on to point out that, while the motorway will not be finished in the space of a few months, the whole road from Olbia to Sassari can be completed in two or three years under the 'accelerated procedure' linked to the organisation of the G8 Summit.
