In the course of a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown dwelt on the priorities on the agenda at the G8 summit on La Maddalena in July.  Brown highlighted the fact that the G8's programme is a very substantial one, ranging from the impact of climate change to the Middle East, security and the struggle against terrorism, and Africa.  Both the G8 summit in July and the G20 talks in London in April will be focusing on the financial and economic crisis.  Brown undescored the need for a coordinated approach to the global crisis, and the importance of the emerging economies contributing to the solution to that crisis.  Brown explained that at the G20 in London:  "we are going to attempt to prepare a global agreement.  If each continent cooperates with the others and the financial institutions play their part, then we shall have a global result that will make for more rapid recovery".
