In the course of a joint news conference with Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, French President Nicolas Sarkozy thanked Italy, which will be shouldering the important responsibility of chairing the G8 in 2009. Sarkozy mentioned the historic decision to extend an invitation to India, China, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and especially Egypt to attend the talks on the second day of the summit, adding that France, too, considers that to be a very important objective. The Elysée chief went on to pledge that France will do everything in its power to ensure that the summit is a great success.
