Speaking at the press conference winding up the G8 Labour Ministers’ Meeting, Italian Welfare Minister Maurizio Sacconi highlighted the success scored by the Social Summit in terms of attendance, stressing that it had been the first social summit since the onset of the crisis on the finance markets.
The joint message sent out by the Labour Minister’s Meeting was that policies were, ultimately, directed at people. The Minister went on to emphasise that the Social Summit had set out clear-cut recommendations for the G8 and the G20. He then confirmed the need for governments to press for social sustainability to be incorporated into the economic sustainability parameters and for a full-fledged social pact capable of rebuilding a circle of confidence in societies, communities and individuals to be arrived at before the G8.
