The Cabinet meeting held in L’Aquila on 23 April 2009 passed Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s proposal to hold the upcoming G8 in the Abruzzo Region as a sign of the drive to boost the areas hit by the earthquake that struck on 6 April 2009.
Speaking at the ensuing press conference, the Prime Minister explained the reasons behind the decision to move the G8 from La Maddalena to Abruzzo.
Mr. Berlusconi stressed that the G8 topics also included the proposal to work together to prevent and cope with natural calamities, so it had seemed appropriate to choose an earthquake-stricken area as the Summit’s venue. What was more, Abruzzo had seemed a more sober, appropriate choice than La Maddalena in view of the current economic crisis. The National Civil Protection Department, the Interior Ministry and the entire Cabinet had come out in favour of the prospect of holding the G8 in Abruzzo.
