Indian Delegation Visits La Maddalena
24/03/2009
An initial round of visits by delegations to inspect the G8 Summit venues on the island of La Maddalena is drawing to a close following a visit from the Indian delegation. Delegates from the African Outreach countries (Ethiopia, Algeria, Nigeria, Senegal, Libya) will be winding this first round of visits up on 15 and 16 April.
On their two-day visit, which took place on 23 and 24 March, the delegation from New Delhi led by Roberto Shetkuntong, a functionary with the Indian Embassy in Italy, followed the now consolidated programme that has been pursued by all of the delegations which have visited Sardinia to date. The guests were received by G8 Mission Structure chief Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi.
In the course of their visit, the Indian Government's representatives showed immense interest in all of the areas where the summit is due to be held, from the Arsenal on La Maddalena to the industrial quay in Olbia which is to host the Press Village. The delegation also visited Olbia airport and the structures in which the delegates will be lodging during the Summit.
The meeting took place in a extremely cordial and constructively cooperative climate, and the visiting delegates voiced particular appreciation for the beauty of the region in which the summit is to be held.
The Outreach Africa delegates, who will be visiting the area on 15 and 16 April, will bring to a close this initial round of visits by delegations from the countries that will be taking part in the Summit in July.
