African Union Commission Delegation Visits La Maddalena

The African Union Commission Delegation Visits La Maddalena

22/04/2009

An African Union Commission delegation paid a visit today to La Maddalena and Olbia to inspect the sites where the G8 Summit is to be held in July. The chairperson of the AU Commission, Gabon’s Jean Ping, will, indeed, be attending a number of the events on the Summit’s agenda.

The AU Commission delegation, lead by the African Union Commission’s chief of ceremonial, Simone Abala, landed at Olbia airport, where it made an initial inspection. It subsequently moved on to Palau, where it set sail for La Maddalena.

The AU Commission’s representatives were met on their arrival by Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi, chief of G8 mission staff, who accompanied the delegation after an initial illustrative briefing to the Arsenal sites, where the finishing touches are being put to the work in the areas set aside for the delegates and the heads of state and governments’ meetings.

The meetings on the event’s security, logistics and organisational aspects were held in the afternoon. The delegation transferred back to Olbia once the meetings were over, making a brief stop at the Molo Cocciani to inspect the area where the International Media Centre is to be set up.
