European Union Delegation Visits L'Aquila
12/05/2009
Foreign delegations are continuing with their visits ahead of the G8 Summit following the decision to shift the Summit venue from La Maddalena to L'Aquila. Five European Union representatives led by delegation chief Alejandro Ulzurrun, coordinator of G8 activities with the Secretariat General, visited the area today. After attending an initial briefing to apprise them of the logistical and organizational aspects of the Summit, the European delegates conducted an inspection of the various areas of the Guardia di Finanza Non-Commissioned Officers' School in Coppito, where both the Summit meetings and bilateral talks are due to be held. They then moved on to view the lodgings for delegates and the Auditorium which is to host the final news conference. After concluding their visit, the European representatives were accompanied to L'Aquila's historical city centre to view the parts of the city that suffered the worst damage in the earthquake: via XX Settembre, Piazza Duomo and the Basilica of Collemaggio. Delegation visits are due to continue tomorrow, with the arrival of the delegation from the United Kingdom.
