An inspection conducted by a delegation from Canada, the country that will be holding the G8 duty presidency in 2010, has brought to a close the first round of preparatory visits to the Summit venue by G8 member country delegations. Delegates from the other countries involved in the Summit in July are expected to visit L'Aquila over the next two weeks.

Agostino Miozzo, who heads up the Civil Protection Department's International Relations Office, was at the Guardia di Finanza Non-Commissioned Officers' School in Coppito to greet the 19 representatives of the Canadian Government, led by Aaron Campbell from the Prime Minister's Office.

In accordance with a now tried and tested agenda, after the traditional briefing designed to introduce the Summit's venue and to explain some of the more general organisational aspects, the Canadian delegates were accompanied by G8 mission structure staff on a tour to inspect the accommodation, the areas where the working sessions are to be held and the areas set aside for news conferences and for the media. This was followed by a series of in-depth meetings to discuss various aspects relating to security, logistics, transportation and telecommunications.

In the afternoon the Canadian Government's representatives were able to visit L'Aquila's historical town centre and the areas worst hit by the earthquake on 6 April.
The delegations from India, China and Egypt are expected to visit L'Aquila on Wednesday 3 June.
