Bilateral talks between Italy and Spain inaugurate La Maddalena Conference Complex, which will also be opening its doors to the general public

The Main Conference Building

10/09/2009

Italy and Spain are holding talks in the setting of the Maddalena archipelago in Sardinia today, addressing a broad agenda of bilateral and international issues in the course of a summit attended by the two countries' prime ministers. The two leaders are accompanied by their respective foreign, defense, interior, economy, economic development, transport and European policies ministers, along with delegations from the two countries' industrialists unions.

The bilateral summit between Italy and Spain is the first event to he held in the conference complex that was due to host last July's G8 Summit on the island of La Maddalena, before an earthquake which struck L'Aquila and Abruzzo in April and which prompted the Italian Government to issue a major signal of its closeness to the stricken population caused the venue to be shifted.

The summit between Italy and Spain at La Maddalena, ahead of Spain's presidency of the European Union Council in the first semester of 2010, is being held in the buildings of the vast conference centre originally built to house the G8 Summit. The talks are being held, specifically, in the building that was due to host the Main Conference and in the other buildings that make up the former Delegations Area. This meeting is only the first in a series of international encounters due to be hosted in the complex on the island of La Maddalena.

The whole complex will be throwing open its doors to the general public over the weekend of 12 and 13 September, when the contractors will be officially handing over the keys to the site and the complex will be officially inaugurated.
