The G8 Foreign Ministers Meet in New York

Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Franco Frattini

23/09/2009

The G8 Foreign Ministers gather today in New York, over a working dinner, for their traditional meeting on the fringe of the United Nations General Assembly: another opportunity for talks, exchanges of views and decisions on the lines of conduct to be adopted on the chief international political issues.

The agenda features talks on the situations in Iran and Afghanistan, topics addressed in depth both at the L’Aquila Summit in July and at the previous Ministerial Meeting in Trieste, when an outreach session extended to take in major regional players and the multilateral organisations operating in the area was held on the issue of the stabilisation of Afghanistan. This innovative approach, pursued by the Italian duty Presidency, won unanimous backing among both the other G8 members and the other countries and intergovernmental bodies involved.

Although this New York session is an informal meeting at which no resolutions are scheduled for adoption, the Italian G8 Presidency has decided to bestow prominence on it by inviting United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to attend. Today’s meeting, too, will thus provide a major opportunity to test the G8 countries’ commitment on the Iran and Afghanistan fronts in the wake of the latest events.
