A Concert in the Guardia di Finanza Inspectors' School Auditorium
08/07/2009
At the end of a G8 working dinner devoted to international political issues, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi attended a concert of opera and symphony music performed by L'Aquila's "Alfredo Casella" Music Conservatory and by the Abruzzo Symphonic Orchestra. The Prime Minister watched the performance seated in the front row of the Guardia di Finanza Inspectors' School Auditorium,in the company of G8 Commissioner Delegate Guido Bertolaso.
The Orchestra was joined for the occasion by the best performers from the Abruzzo Youth Orchestra, a mark of the determination to involve young people in the event. 100 members of Chieti's Teatro Marrucino Choir and the Fondazioni all'Opera choir from Teramo also performed.
The two solo performers, soprano Carmela Remigio and mezzo-soprano Monica Bacelli, also hail from the Abruzzo region. These two singers have represented the region on some of the world's most important stages. The programme consisted of arias from Rossini's Sermiramide, Mozart's Clemenza di Tito and Puccini's La Bohème.
After the "Quis Est Homo" duet from Rossini's Stabat Mater, the concert ended with a Te Deum for two choirs and orchestra by Giuseppe Verdi. This wonderful hymn of praise prompted a moment of lofty reflection on universal issues.
